Default SWC Museum of Tolerance CD on cyber-hate
At a briefing today of the House International Affairs Middle East Subcommittee on Capitol Hill, the Simon Wiesenthal Center's Associate Dean, Rabbi Abraham Cooper, pictured right with Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), presented Digital Terrorism and Hate 2004, the sixth volume of the Center's annual report of problematic websites. Digital Terrorism and Hate 2004 exposes the growing use of the Internet as a key propaganda weapon, marketing tool and fundraising engine for supporters of terrorist groups such as al Qaeda and Hamas, as well as neo-Nazi, Skinhead, and other hate groups on both sides of the Atlantic.

Based on some 4,000 problematic websites, this interactive report presents some of the online recruitment videos used to attract young people into international terrorism and their culture of hate as well as how the subculture of hate on Internet continues to be used to denigrate minorities and make money for professional racists and bigots.

Designed to assist law-enforcement, public officials, educators, parents, and the media to better understand the nature and proliferation of extremist websites, previous volumes of Digital Terrorism and Hate have been presented before the United States Congress, the United Nations, the European Union, and has proven to be an invaluable tool for law enforcement, the media, teachers and students.

Topics include:

Recruiting for terror: al Qaeda, Hamas, other terrorist groups and their supporters from across the globe use the Internet as a key propaganda weapon, a marketing tool to attract young people, and as a fundraising engine.

Cyberwars: From hacking enemy websites to utilizing steganographic codes, extremists and terrorist have turned the Internet itself into an online battleground.

Hate Games: Online 'games' preach hate and violence against minorities. Users can gun down illegal aliens at the U.S.-Mexican border in Border Patrol, shoot Blacks in Niggaz Doom, hunt down Jews in Duck Hunt, and gas Turks in KZ Manager.

Conspiracies of Hate: Websites that distort history proliferate from promoting the new big lie that the U.S. and Israel were behind 9/11, to denying the Nazi Holocaust, to denigrating the legacy of Civil Rights hero Martin Luther King, Jr.

Homegrown Extremists: Groups like Skinheads and neo-Nazis use the worldwide web to expand their activities in Russia, across Europe and Latin America.
