Was watching this afternoons CNN ticker tape (while the reg news was being aired) and noted a piece about a female 16 yrs old who once again has been refused to join her High school's Cheerleader group. Now she is getting the ACLU to assist in SUING under the american's with disabilities act to Let her join, even though she has no arms or legs..
What the heck is society coming too, when someone can sue to be on anything, when it is clear they are not capable of doing it... What next. A blind/mute deaf person suing to be on the debate team?> |

I suppose they could have some kind of wheeled contraption that they roll her out on, and a megaphone mounted so she can do the cheers or whatever. If she can't come through on the acrobatics, by god she better bring it on with the yelling/cheering part. |

Those cheer squads are pretty cut throat anyway. Plus, it's a pretty expensive activity. My daughter is on a squad, and being around the snobs at the competitions just makes me gag. I'm pretty sure that if the spirit of accomodation wasn't there naturally, forcing it is only going to bring this girl more problems.

this is just foolish. she can't jump, etc like the rest of the girls. and it doesn't seem that they like her enough to make her an "honorary" member. so she's going to sue, and force her way on? what about the girls who get cut for no talent? should they also claim a disability and sue?
it just never stops. |

Some people just need to realize they can't get what they want all the time. I hate it when people use a disability to get their way. I understand when someone has a disability that they can't help having it and I'm all for people who overcome their disabilities to do what is considered "normal" but sometimes some people take it too far. When I was younger I wanted to be a professional basketball player. Obviously that didn't happen but I knew by high school I wasn't good enough. Does that mean I should sue if I would try out and not make a pro-team?
I don't think that accommodating her would be win-win for anyone though. I think the girls on the team would resent her and it might just open up the ability for others to sue. It's just cheerleading - it's not like she's going to make a living doing that someday. They should just make her an honorary member or something. |
