BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - Forty-one individuals were arrested for eating in public places during the fasting month, said a press statement from Ministry of Religious Affairs yesterday.

The press statement which include the breakdown of offenders acording to districts showed 30 individuals (25 males and five females) arrested in the Brunei-Muara District.

Eight males were arrested in Tutong, while three (two male and one female) were arrested in Belait. None was arrested in the Temburong District.

The press statement, however did not mention how these arrests were made.

The Religious Enforcement Section under the ministry's Syariah Affairs Department had been keeping an extra eye for those defying the religious law and anyone caught eating, drinking or smoking in public during the day will and can be charged under the Brunei Islamic Religious Council and the Qadi Courts Act Section 77.

Under Chapter 173 of the Act, Muslims caught eating during the fasting hours in Ramadhan and those who sell them the food (employees) will be fined $500 for the first offence, $750 for the second offence and $1,000 for the third and subsequent offences. Rashidah Abu Bakar
