No, it is you. Marianne Bessey, the same person whose law firm makes money by defending corporations that do animal testing, allwhile you pocket the profits and purport to be an animal rights puritan. Do you seriously want to do this all over again? Ok, let's do it...

Dechert LLP : Lawyers
Marianne Bessey is a staff attorney in the litigation department, focusing much of her practice on mass torts and product liability.

What does Dechert LLP do with mass torts and product liability?
Dechert LLP : Newsroom
During the coming year, Dechert is scheduled to defend Altria, Amgen, AstraZeneca, Baxter, GSK, Johnson & Johnson, Merck, and West Pharmaceutical, among other companies, in mass tort and product liability litigation.

Gee, who amongst this list does animal testing? All of them.
Gee, who amongst the people you know care about your personal obsession with this lawyer, whom you've never met?

Yes, it does. Maybe not when you make stupid youtube videos of police acting nice to you while you trespass. Maybe not when you make stupid videos of middle aged whores standing at the zoo with signs. But, in general, yes-it does cost money to update a website.
So, how much money would it cost the Philadelphia Zoo or the Pittsburgh Zoo to post an update, using employees already on the payroll, and a website already set up? You seem to know a lot about it, please advise!

Hannibal woulda crushed PETA with his elephants. I know, I know ... PETA's not part of this story, but I love elephants. Especially ones used in war.
My understanding is that Hannibal's elephants crushed Hannibal's own troops. Their use seemed to be more of a gimmick, not really a tactical weapon. Sadly, their exploitation continues today, with confinement in tiny displays in zoos and forced to do stupid tricks in circuses.

Default Zoo and circus elephants freed!
This should make Marianne from PB times very happy!

India springs zoo, circus elephants :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: World

November 14, 2009

NEW DELHI -- All elephants in Indian zoos and circuses will be moved to wildlife parks and game sanctuaries where the animals can graze more freely, officials said Friday.

The decision affects about 140 elephants in 26 zoos and 16 circuses in the country, said B.K. Gupta, an officer at India's Central Zoo Authority.

The order followed complaints from animal rights activists about elephants that are kept in captivity and often chained for long hours.

The elephants currently living in zoos or circuses are to be moved to "elephant camps" run by the government's forest department and located near protected areas and national parks. There they would be able to roam and graze freely, but "mahouts," or traditional elephant trainers, would still keep an eye on them. AP

Alas, some zoos in America still do not want to accept this sort of change which is good for the animals that they are supposedly looking out for.

Dallas Zoo's elephants seem to be some of the ones treated pretty badly:

Does the Philly zoo still have elephants, or did they finally move them elsewhere?

In fact - one elephant - Dulary - was sent to a sanctuary in May 2007.

One elephant, Petal, died in June 2008 after collapsing in the cement barn. She had arthritis in her hips, elbows and knees so severe that she was unable to rise. When her keepers arrived in the morning, it was too late and she died.

The surviving two elephants, Kallie and Bette, both 27 years old, were shipped on July 8, 2009 to a breeding-holding facility outside Pittsburgh where the zoo has previously stated they will be bred, first through forced breeding with a bull elephant, and if that doesn't work, then through artificial insemination, an extremely invasive and painful procedure. Since Kallie and Bette are both 27 and have not been bred before, the chances they will get pregnant at all is very slight, and if they do, ample zoo industry data shows it is likely that they or their calf will die or suffer from a life-threatening condition.

Despite repeated requests, no updates have been provided on Kallie or Bette since they moved in, except for one staged media event in late July.

No need to look as far as Dallas. Check out what's happening in your own backyard and learn about the sad status of the elephants from the Philly Zoo here:

Thanks for the link, ACG, but a post providing old information isn't an update, even if the zoo pretends it is. An update is actual new information, photos, or video. The info on the zoo's website dated Sept. 14 is meaningless - e.g. the elephants have been forced "to pick up their feet on cue" (read - through the use of a bullhook) since an early age. A similar "update" would describe how they know how to use their trunks to drink water.

Zoospeak is interesting - the Philadelphia Zoo calls old information "an update" and the breeding-holding facility outside Pittsburgh a "sanctuary." Sadly, many people don't question the information.

What about elephants that are use by tourists for rides at temple and forts? Are they still being used?

good question. I don't know. I would think those would also be "retired."

good to see RowanM here...even if I'm not as vocal about issues as she is.

One source close to the area stated that in fact, it is only elephants in zoos that are affected by this order - not elephants in the circus or exploited in other ways. It has been widely and almost universally reported to include elephants in both zoos and circuses, however. I don't know which is the truth.

This is from my contact in India:
---
Both CZA and AWBI are working on this mix up.

The AWBI will soon come out with an official statement I am told by the
Secretary as this matter has been tabled before the Board members.

I had earlier written to the Board asking to throw light on the statement of
the secretary.

Also CZA has verbally confirmed with a leading Animal Rights group of India
head that the 'Zoo' order also includes the Circuses as well.

PETA India Mentor, Anuradha Sawhney and CUPA Vice President, Ms. Suparna
Ganguly have also written to the AWBI and CZA in this regard to clear the
confusion.

Ms Brindha Nandakumar of WRRC, Bangalore has written to the AWBI and this is
what she has to say, "Regarding whether the same applies to zoos, I wish to
clarify that the word "ZOO" as defined in Section 2 (39) of the Wild
Life (Protection) Act covers circuses and hence the notification also
applies to circuses.

Section 2 (39): "zoo" means an establishment , whether stationary or
mobile, where captive animals are kept for exhibition to the public (and
includes a circus and rescue centres but does not include an establishment of a licensed dealer in captive animals).

Prior to 2003, circuses were expressly excluded from the definition of zoos
. However by virtue of the amendment to the Wild Life (Protection) Act in
the year 2003, circuses were included in the definition of zoos as per
Amendment 2003.

Hence the Wild life Protection Act and all Rules framed under the WLP Act
pertaining to zoos apply to circuses for all purposes."

It is not only a matter of time before we get the official word on 'Circus'
also being a part of this BAN.

I would rather see funding go towards the animals rather than updating innernet nutjobs every friggin' day. Even if Marianne had a batphone to get up to the moment updates, she'd be complaining about something else.

Wake up blowhole...there's no damn elephant conspiracy going on.
