I thot he coined the name 'Harijan' to address them? I read a long time ago that Gandhi took the term "Harijan" from the term "Thirukular" which Ramanuja coined a thousand years earlier, in an attempt to eradicate the humiliating overtones that were associated with the more usual "caste names". Gandhi was acquainted with the teachings of Ramanuja, so it's certainly a possibility.
