Hi Marcus, I think I know how you feel! I have a somewhat similar perhaps even more difficult situation.

In my case I've actually lost contact with my friend, see my first post on this forum http://www.thailandguidebook.com/cgi-bin....;t=5170
but still think of her constantly.

I'm determined however to go there anyway and work.

It seems the most likely jobs for non-immigrants are in teaching ESL - if English is your native language. While a degree is most desirable it seems that jobs are available if you at least have an ESL related certificate and some teaching experience.

I haven't completed my Bachelor of Ed just yet but have had 8 yrs experience in teaching/training in the corporate and private education (business colleges) market.

Hopefully this and 12 months training in Saudi Arabia will help my cause. Without a degree though the pay range is a lot lower so you have to factor in how you will survive on maybe less than 20,000 bht per month.

Taking freelance work and working weekends might be a necessity until you get some local knowledge.

I suppose in your case as you are with your girlfriend the obvious solution might be to marry :-) But of course this is a big step and perhaps you are not ready for that yet. Others on this forum are better qualified to comment on how being married to a Thai might further your cause to work/stay in Thailand.

The Ajarn.com website offers plenty of insights into non-citizens options in relation to work. While it is geared towards the ESL teaching market some of its links talk about other employment opportunities that its readers have pursued.

You would need to find out what areas you are allowed to work in - as from what I can gather you are not able to work in all occupations. Remember too that you may be looking at 'local' pay rates which unless you have some sort of family support over there may make it difficult to support yourself.

Have you considered doing something together, as Frightend_Farang is doing with his Thai girlfriend.

Good luck with your endeavour.
