my guess would be that it was partly due to the face angle of the club

I've always had trouble with closed face drivers sending my teeshots to the moon, when a face is closed to help fight slices, the loft is effectively higher if you square the clubface to your eye before you swing. (and the opposite for open faces)

I had a 9.5 degree hibore XL (non-tour version) that I would literally find in it's own pitch march in the fairway, just like it'd landed from a SW shot to a soft green.....

I'm sure I have some other swing flaws that help make the driver balloon up like that, but changing to an open faced driver has helped me out.
