I was rifle shopping and decided I wanted a Ruger Mini 14. Then, decided I wanted a larger caliber and so I decided I wanted a Mini 30. Then, I saw they were about $1000 so I decided on the AK.
I got my SGL21 for $500 back a couple years ago. They're $800.00 now, so I think I came out ok.

I guess I just wanted to say, I know how you feel. If you decide on an AK, get a nice one. There are lots of cheap, crappy ones out there which would be fine if you just needed a gun.
Probably can't go wrong with the Mini 14 or Mini 30.

What I like about these is they're good defense/assualt rifles but can also be used for hunting. The Mini 14 might be good for whitetail deer, but if you're going hog/boar hunting, it might just piss him off enough to come try to eat you. But, you might be a better shot than me.
