What I don't understand is why american shows have to repeat everything they say at least twice.. Really annoying.

Why say a 1/4 mile rather than 1320ft?

Its a visual unit of reference. We see football stadiums all the time, we know how large 100 yards is in comparison to the human.

Its just a reference to a commonly sized object. Its mainly this way because the Imperial system makes it anything but easy to compare objects and volumes directly. Unlike metric which follows a very easy unit of measurement.
