What's the point of having a 4-course dinner at Jean George for $300 with a $250 bottle of Chateau Margaux? You could get the same calorie count with a McDonalds sandwich and a Coke. A watch is one of a few jewelry items that a self-respecting man should wear. Watch, cufflinks, pen, pocketknife... and maybe a moneyclip/cigarette case/business card carrier. That's pretty much all men are allowed... the watch being the most common. I wear a decent-looking Seiko automatic that cost me about $200. It's been worn to death over the past 10 years or so. It is coated steel, so the coating has worn off in places and the glass is chipped, scratched and cracked. If I can afford it, I will replace it with a high end watch before I go for my interviews... partly for the same reason why I will wear a tailored DKNY suit, Bruno Magli shoes, and carry a Brooks Brothers briefcase... and partly because i can appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship that go into a fine timepiece. I will also appreciate having a sapphire-glass crystal that can't really be scratched, as well as a solid body with no coating, that's not going to rust or wear away. It's the same reason why we don't all drive the cheapest car, or live in a box.
