in the 80's my family's system had a 5 1/4 inch 8MB hdd, i remember we upgraded in the early 90's to something with 8GB on it.

That can't be right. My family got our first PC in '96 with a 2gb HDD, and i didn't know anyone at the time who even had a 1gb HDD. I remember my friend being amazed that you could actually hear the 8x CD drive spinning up because it was 'so fast!'
