The new Triumph Triples are supposed to be amazing bikes...a nice mix on the motor, and pretty comfy as well....yet still pretty bat out of hell like the 4 cyl with a better sound, etc.
I recently went from an R1 to a Roadstar (Yamahas) sportbikes are awesome because of the power handling, everything. But I couldn't take what it did to my knees (I'm 6'2") and freeway riding was horrible IMO, plus even worse for passengers...and no storage.
Roadstar is heavy, far less powerful (in spite of being 1700cc). But a Vtwin has its own charms. Now with no baffles sounds badass, I have a back rest, footboards, saddlebags. Hell I can go on a trip with it and take my fiancee.
Depends what you want out of a bike. Many bikes these days are singular purpose...really good at something but not at others.
Edit: It would be nice if I actually read the OP. A bandit or Nighthawk S would be a good choice. The S was a mid 80s bike, a sort of sportbike...it was pretty damn fast, but had a shaft drive, could be had for cheap now and a great bike for you if you can find one.
