Ah, like Seiko Kinetic? Why do you need a machine to wind it then?
well, if you don't wear it for a couple days, the spring runs out of sprung and the watch stops. Some of them are easier to reset than others, but if you have a couple watches, chances are you won't be wearing it every day and winders are an easy way to keep them current.

also, I've read that a properly wound watch will keep alot longer than one that is wound, dies, wound, dies etc
