I take it by that logic you also bought Lil Wayne's CD this week? Why would you care what the average movie goer thinks? Surely of much greater value is what like minded people think of a film. You are either an individual with certain taste or I take it you are an automaton who just wants to follow the general population cos they think it's cool. There's plenty of things I love that most people wouldn't like and there's plenty of things that have been hugely popular which seemed plain stupid to me.

But while we are at it IMDB votes do not reflect the general population a quick scan of those figures shows that 90% of the votes came from Males, over 2/3rd from Males aged 18-29. Take a look almost all the time 2/3rd of the vote for any IMDB film come from Males aged 18-29. Even it's a Wonderful Life Am I surprised that a film like The Dark Knight would make it to the top of a list of films voted for by 18-29 year males? No and by extension I don't think the fact that they did vote it No. 1 on opening weekend suggests it's the greatest film as assessed by the general population.
I don't just blindly follow what the general public likes, but of course I take into consideration what ANY other person would tell me is good. I'm not above being open minded enough to give something other people like a chance. I don't have to go out of my way to listen to music and watch movies that are 'different' and 'unique'.

And after listening to and watching different suggestions I choose what I like best.

How the hell do you do it? Go into best buy and randomly pick a movie that you've never heard of? We ALL take peoples opinions to see what's out there.

For the record, I never listen to the radio because I hate what's played on it. Some of my favorite bands are Stars, The Knife, and Broadcast. I bet you've never heard of any of them. Some of my favorite movies are 2001: A space Odyssey, Lost in Translation, and The Fountain.

The Dark Knight ISNT even a 10/10 for me! I give it a solid 9/10 but I acknowledge and understand why it's rated so high, and I think it deserves it. It didn't get a 10/10 from me because it didn't touch me in any personal way, it didn't change my way of thinking about things, and it wasn't something absolutely life changing. But that's for me personally. I just really respect how it has perfected its' appeal to pretty much everyone. Reminds me of the LOTR trilogy in that way.
