I have heard a different reason from a very respectable senior alim. The reason given was that since he had a photographic memory, Allah

blessed him in such a way that he had the ability to memorize volumes and volumes of works just by reading it once. He would devour kitaabs on science, philosophy, mathematics, fiqh and tafseer with no trouble at all.
However, Allah

has told us that the Qu'ran is a book which cannot be defeated and is unlike no other. So despite him being able to memorize so much, Allah

made it so that the Qu'ran was the only book he could not memorize; and thus was the only book which defeated him.
