It was once a prequel but it was rewritten not to be. As far as it taking place in the alien universe I don't think it does based on the articles I was reading.

Once again, I never said anything about it being a prequel.

The movie "Alien" and the movie "Predator" don't have anything to do with each other, but we know they take place in the same universe.
