The main difference between the national Republican and Democratic parties is, at the heart of it, marketing. They are all politicians, and most would do or say whatever it took to gain/retain power.

As it turns out, the world is pretty complex, yet voters are most swayed by broad-stroke, jingoistic sloganeering. There's no upside for either camp in restricting themselves to actual principals. They simply filter their convenient positions into rhetoric designed to appeal to their base while unsettling the opposition.
