Did it have sparklies? I knew it was an explosive.

You know, like even a molotov cocktail has sparklies of a sort. Well, it's fire dripping burning rag, but I think we can count it as a sparklie. I count it as a sparklie anyway.

Or was it a hand grenade? THAT doesn't count.
Not in and of itself. Maybe depending on the object being blown up, that might produce sparklies, but that's not the same.
