Default Who are pashtuns??
I am a pakistani of pashtun background. Can anyone tell me where pashtuns belong in a racial grouping???

From some of the genetic studies i have seen pashtuns are placed between west eurasian and south asians, with also some middle east in them.

Pashtuns come in many features ranging from indian to european. but generally i would say we look more iranian or turkish in looks

According to Dodecad, the Pashtun/Pathan are mainly South Asian (39.1%) and West Asian (25.6%). So you're right. Like most Central/South Asian populations, they also have a degree of Mongoloid admixture. What I find curious, though, is that according Dodecad they also have a noticeable degree of West European admixture (~13%). That's perhaps a Pan-Indo-European thing?

PS - percentages are admixture estimates found in a sample of 7 Pathan individuals in the HGDP project.

Thats a old study from Peshawar^ there is a new study from afghanistan of 189 pashtun males which puts pashtun (west eurasian) dna at 60%, its clear that there must have been a migration from some where like Turkey or Armenia or Caucacus towards afghanistan/western pakistan area, but the problem is the time line, Afghanistan has been at the crossroads of different empires for very long. Pashtuns defiantly are very mixed, thats why i think our looks are so mixed, though generally we do resemble other iranic populations

This classic National Geographic photo of an Afghan woman was Pashtun I believe:

She looks somewhere between an Iranid and an Indid.

The Pashtuns, or the Pathans, are to me the bridge between west and south Asia. Their DNA structure and physiognomy generally reflects this.

Physically and culturally they are closer to Iranians and Tajiks than they are to south Asian groups. Their language also belongs to the Indo-Iranian confederation unlike the majority of other languages spoken in Pakistan such as Urdu and Punjabi.

Racially, most Afghans belong to the Indo-Afghan type, the tall, long-headed, long-faced, bony, hirsute Oriental branch.

Regards.

Did you just say Punjabi and Urdu are not Indo-Iranian? What do you think the Indo refers to?

I think he meant Iranian group, as Indo-Iranian is the most eastern branch of the Indo European language family. Pashto falls within the Iranian language group, while Punjabi and Urdu are Indic or Indo-Aryan languages.

And this is also why Pasthuns look fairly distinct from their Indic speaking neighbours phenotypically wise, being Iranic people.

Tocharian is actually the most eastern. But yea I get it otherwise.

Everybody in South Asia is a mixture of South Asian and West Asian. Even tribals are 40% West Asian.
