Flying Spagetti Monster

As you may know, the Kansas school board has decided to allow intelligent design to be taught in science classes alongside evolution.

If you are as worried about this development as I am then you should become a believer in the Flying Spagetti Monster.

I've always thought God created everything then that's it. End of story and go on and live their happy little lives. Now it'll make me feel better that I know about FSM. GRRREATT! Now the Christians can get back to work and argue against FSM.

Seriously, I personally feel the entire issue is just so stupid. Let the students choose what they WANT to study. They think god created the universe, great! Go for it. For the rest of us, really, leave us alone. I really hate when people force their beliefs unto others. And leave the people alone who thinks revolution makes more sense than god. People who believe in revolution let the ID people have their own classes.

I think this should move to the Flames section, because I'm already heated. I'm sure more people will have their own opinions on these issues and start arguments.

The state of mind of some people is laughable. Just b/c there was seperation between church and state doesnt mean religion should no longer exist in school/work environments. This is appauling, let everyone believe and worship in their own way. I do beleive that ID should be taught, because if you teach evolution, then you must teach the other belief, and screw the ppl who get angry, because if I got angry at being taught evolution nobody would care, because science holds too much sway nowadays.

Once something is scientifically proven pple believe that it is set in stone, when in fact, many things that were scientifcally dicovered are usually disproven and corrected years later. Where as the belief in one god will allways be the same. So all you PU/FSM lovers, give over, and let the truth set you free. Peace.

Ahmed.

Sure, teach ID, but not in a science class. It isn't science. Teach it in a comparative religion study where it belongs.

As for you getting angry if you are taught evolution, too bad. Would you get mad at learning the theory of gravity, or relativity?

/shakes fist at sky.. DAMN YOU GRAVITY!!!!

Well how about the other way around? Screw the people get angry for people not believing the same thing as them. There should be two different classes, teach the kids whatever they want to believe, and they should have a choice. Thought this was a democratic country that I have the right to choose what I want to believe. I believe in choice and freewill.

Though, every knows about God, you can teach them beliefs and all, but you can't teach a Catholic priest not to molest kids. Science on the other hand has nothing to do with moral values but to see things and find out why, and not everyone knows how science works. Saying God created everything is like a easy way out and just stop thinking. Without the sciencetists, we wouldn't be where we are today with the ID ways of thinking. Though, I'm neutral. I believe they should be taugh, too so people can have an open mind on everything. And since everyone pays for the public schools, they do have a right to teach that. Putting a sticker on a science book calling it's a lie it's just stupid, at least the scientists have some sorts of physical evidence. God exists, only if someone believes in him within their hearts and without bashing their believes on others. Just a thought...

I'm kind of new 'round here, and sure don't want to pick a fight, but do you realize what you just said?

What if I want to believe that 2 + 2 = 6? Or that Pi can properly be expressed as 3? Or that the revolutionary war was fought by midgets in full pirate regalia? Does this mean they should create a class that caters to my (obviously flawed) beliefs?

School is meant to broaden your horizons and educate you with the most accurate knowledge currently available, not further wrap you in a cocoon of blissful ignorance.

Hey if you think 2+2=6 that's fine with me http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif That's what I'm trying to say, if you strongly believe 2+2=6, I'm not standing in your way. That's why you should take other classes to know other things rather than 2+2=6, and come up with your own theory to think. I don't think I was trying to "take classes to make you turn yourself into a dummy", I was saying take different classes to have more knowledge and have an open mind http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif

I don't think the argument is about the separation between church and state, I think it is about belief, as important as it is, being marketed as fact.

Science is not set in stone.
Science is about constructing ideas, and trying to disprove them through experiment and argument. The scientific community worldwide is a network of people constuctively trying to tear apart each others arguments. Those arguments which cannot be disproved are used to make further ideas.

So any scientific theory is generally considered "the best idea so far", this doesn't make it concrete, but it makes it a pretty firmly considered and well based theory.

The problem with Intelligent Design is that it is selling itself as a scientific theory, which it is not.
It is trying to deconstruct the theory of evolution (incidentally, they are only attacking one of many theories, and an old one at that) as they are well entitled to do, but the biggest problem is that they are not part of the process of putting themselves up for question.
Without this open forum of questioning and argument, it is not science, it is belief.
This is religion, which as any follower of christianity, judaism, or the muslim faith will tell you, is based on faith. Without faith it loses a good deal.

To paraphrase Douglas Adams:
The argument goes like this :
"I refuse to prove that I exist", says God, "for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing."
"But", says Man, "Intelligent Design is a dead giveaway isn't it? we could not have evolved by chance. it proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don't. QED."
"Oh dear", says God, "I hadn't thought of that," and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.

That makes no sense. 2 + 2 != 6, and that's a fact. If we are going to allow classes that are blatantly, provably incorrect, why bother having any to begin with?

As a muslim, I dont believe in the same ID as would Christians/Jews, because we as muslims believe the Bible/Torah are adulturated and incorrect due to changes since they were written. So my opinions go beyond the church and state issue. Even beyond the dawarnism/evolution issue. Let all things be taught and let the person decide which is best for him. Surely God will guide whom he wishes in whichever direction he pleases. The main problem nowadays is the ignorance of what the True basis of religion is, and many people have no clue whatsoever about Monotheism, so the belief in Evolution/scientific atheism is a somewhat popular belief.
It is quite astonishing that human beings nowadays have the humility to say they have evolved from monkeys, but they do not have the humility and truth in their hearts to submit to their god who created all that exists. So these peoples humility is truly misguieded and is no longer humilty, but arrogance at is peak.

But i digress. I have too many things that i want to say that i just wouldnt have room or time to type. And it seems my ability to move to tangents of the real subject in remarkable so i will stop now. Peace.

Ahmed.

Just to strike preemptively:
Could we not drag this thread into a there is / there is not a god flamewar?

I think that the FSM would be very disappointed if we did.

southernplayer99 11-01-2005 09:01 PM

How about this...everyone get to believe what he/she wants. Whatever God/Goddess/Spirts you believe in, thats your personal belief. And whatever someones else on the internet has to say about your belief doesn't matter.

A school is a place of learning and academics. Telling people that the theory that God created everything is a valid scientific theory has no place in a science classroom. Kids can still believe in ID if they want...but it shouldnt be taught in class. I would not want my [future] kid to get a question on his test wrong because he says evolution is the only valid scientific theory of how we came to be. It's as simple as that.
