Fighting off sickness

Hey all!

Any suggestions for fighting off or at least temporarily alieviating a chest cold? With a kendo tournament this weekend it would sure not be pleasent to end up sitting it out.

Thanks!

Garlic, fruit, and some vodka with lemon juice. Good luck!

Warm water with some slight salt. As mentioned above, lemon, and body rest. Provided you have been training heavily in the past, it wont hurt in not practicing for a few days.

Lots of vitamin C, drink almost constantly, something hot like tea, and take the occassional hot steamy shower to help clear out your system. I am going through the same thing and a nice hot shower helps relieve some of the pressure and helps me breath easier.

In addition to the shower, I keep really warm overnight, with an extra warm blanket or additional layer.

Steamrooms are you friend,
Also take some Mucinex the night before-- it will help clear out your lungs.

Goodluck.

When Miyakawa Sensei visited Oni Kai in February I went with a chest infection, in fact it was Pleurisy, where your lungs and inside of the rib cage are inflamed and rubbing together. That's lasted up until now really, my kiai is pitiful and after every practice I feel like I've been tsuki-ed in the chest.

Of course if your cold is going to stop you attending the tournament, then yeah a hot drink, blankets and spend the day in bed would be the easy option.

Definately fluids & rest. but once you hit the taikai, your adrenaline will kick in and you won't feel the effects of your cold till after you are done with all your shiai.

Drugs. Pseudophed works for me.

Recently i came down with a slight cold, but resulted in just my chest having 20% asthma or something (apparently from the doctor i had only 80% lung capacity out of 106%...yes 106% was my theoretical output?, maybe the 6% is to do with a slightly bigger capacity than the average population? i dont know.)

Anyways, when i do side twisting stretches, and in quick concession, i get alot of pain around the sides, and front abdomen, until i totally warm up and then it goes. Did that ever happen to you when you had the cold?

Whenever I feel like I am getting a cold, I like to practice and try and sweat it out. But I am also a fool.

Round about the diaphragm, the bottom of my ribs on the sides was where it started and then spread to my chest. Now it is just sore on my left pectoral. After my third course of anti-biotics it is beginning to shift but I sneezed this afternoon which was killer. A good few days of ibuprofen as well to reduce the inflammation.

It was uncomfortable during stretches but I don't recall it lessening after them and it certainly wasn't as low down as yours.

If I knew how to stop a cold, I'd be a gajillionire.

Kinda rings the bell in where i could feel it, and where it was reaching too, by the doctor.

I however do NOT believe in medicines, as i believe them to be artificial. I just have natural stuff, like the fruits off the trees, the vegetables, the natural rest, etc.

Good ol soup is great too.

I took another test, and i am running at 95% lung capacity WITHOUT the need of medicines and those asthma breathing things. So yeah i am happy, and it was all due to lots of water, rest, and natural foods and drinks. Also i had to miss out on the friday night parties and stuff ahhahaha so i guess that helped too.

http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/biggrin.gif i hope your getting better though.

If you are of age, you could mix some Brandy, lemon juice, honey and tea together to make a Hot Tottie. While there aren't any medicinal properties to it that I know of, it still helps in making you feel better and making it easier to sleep.

"I however do NOT believe in medicines..."

I find no harm in medicine. If something artificial is going to help cure a disease, you bet I will take it. I find there are just some problems with medicine. I don't remember who said it, but why is it that anyone can get all the viagra they want and more but we can't get medicines we actually need to people who need them. That and the whole commercialism of medicine so that now we see ads for them on tv so instead of my doctor saying that I should take ___ medicine, the general populace is being brainwashed into thinking, oh, that zanderoft whatchamacallit I saw on TV looks right for me, let's ask my doctor...

The problem is not the medicine, it's the people who misuse them... although doesn't this phrase apply to just about anything... http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif

I remember Bono saying he thought it was shocking you could get a nice cold bottle of coca cola anywhere in Africa, but anti-retrovirals or even paracetamol were nowhere to be found...

As a side note, not only do I believe in medicines, I've even seen one!

This season, every time I've felt a cold coming on, I swear kendo practice wiped it right out. Probably just a coincidence, though.
