IRC is the mother of all chat-things

you download a client like mIRC or Xirc, and you connect to your favorite server, then you can create a chatroom (for free!) and talk rubbish to each other.

IRC is mostly used by the more geeky kind of person, to discuss the latest linux distros or games

I don't mind either way, but I find efnet to be congested, filled with lamers, and a lot of nicknames could be unavailable for the bulk of the time.

Check out irc.stratics.com sometime, but it's mostly for gamers. Fairly civilized, though.

Unless you want to be targeted for viruses, hacks, spyware, rookits, spam, porn, remote takeovers, stalking, and the gods know what else, I recommend AGAINST IRC (s)
Most offices have banned it, and the Government watches it closely (where they can.) It's filled with the sort of people you saw the South Park bunch morph into at the end of the famous WOW episode.
IRC once served a noble purpose many many years ago, but as it stands today it is filled mostly with:

Vermin
Pervs and Pedos
Freaks
Warez D00dz
ScriptKiddies (Lots of these)
Spammers, Crackers, Criminals and the general scummy underbelly of the Internet.
Zealots
Fanboys (Of every kind)
and Wanna-Be-Losers from EVERY disgusting faction of life...I'm looking at YOU #@Giantess.

That's a good point. Back in the 90's, I don't remember IRC being too stupid. Or maybe I was seeing things in the simulacrum of a silly computer gamer kid.

Maybe we can make a javascript chatroom using a good script, in that case.

What about those who are already using IRC ? (people who are connected to some servers as is)

I didn't mean to suggest creating an IRC channel for this forum. I was just wondering whether there is a channel floating around.
