Default Sharp Phil - street swordsman
I don't know how many of you are familiar with Phil Elmore - he's a writer who fancies himself a martial artist. Here's his latest magnum opus: "Street Sword".

I'll have to remember the next time a knife-wielding thug approaches me on the street. I'll tell him that he shouldn't have brought a knife to a gunfight, then I'll plug him between the eyes with a .45ACP. Seriously, does anybody think that they'll be allowed to walk down the street with a sword and won't be hassled, either by a knife-wielding thug or maybe gun-wielding police officers?

Being a “dojo-dwelling, gi-wearing martial artists hung up on ancient traditions and picture-perfect stances”; I am not offended but that description.
Sad through that people are that deluded they would write books like this… I mean it was just the other day I had the dilemma that a knife wielding murderer would crawl through my window.

I did occur to me that I could use my sword on him; but what good would it do if he could crawl trough the glass?

It gets better:

'cause we all know guns are fundamental to martial artists...

What a nobhead, why are people so obsessed with street fighting?

Because dreaming is easier than training, why else?

it may be invaluable if a knife-wielding thug ever comes crawling through your bedroom window one dark night It's true. Don't underestimate the stopping power of a well-thrown book in the dark!

I understand that a soldier of fortune is a synonym for mercenary. I am afraid to ask this, but, did you mean that there is actually a real magazine for these people?

I just wiped the tears from my eyes and my belly doesn't ache any more. Man oh man the mental image of this scene makes chuckle again.
Hondo the way of the book (after dark of course) Will it be enough even to stop Ninja's?
Thanks for the laugh of the day.

Ah Mr. Elmore.
Thy name is Comedy.
There's been a severe lambasting of him over on Bullshido.com some time ago. (Though you have to register.)
Very entertaining by the way.
He had a review of Cold Steel's Practical Katana on his site (which is amazingly missing) that was pure comedic gold.
He even has his own Wikipedia entry set up by his detractors.

Snip:
Phil Elmore is a martial artist and professional writer living and working in central New York. The publisher of The Martialist: The Magazine for Those Who Fight Unfairly, Elmore has become widely known in the self-defense and martial arts communities.

Yes, he us quite well known....as a moronic boob, and running joke manifested into reality on the art of how to get yourself killed very quickly.

Kenzan,

Hanwei makes the PK, not CS - probably why you couldn't find it.

Here you go:

...and an image for entertainment purposes.

hahahahaha OMG will this idiot ever give up this BS? This guy should be locked up. He's delusional and apparently armed.

Let's pick his synopses apart, just for the fun of it. A post especially for you Phil:

The sword has been a brutally effective weapon for thousands of years, but try to find instruction on using one for self-defense today Uhhh, self-defence? When was the last time I met a sword wielding nut on the street....
...
...
...
Ah, yes I remember, NEVER

and you’re liable to find nothing but books written by dojo-dwelling, gi-wearing martial artists hung up on ancient traditions and picture-perfect stances It's called basics moron. The traditional stuff is a reverence and shows respect to the history of the art. But what do you know about basics Phil? You've never sticked at one art long enough to get that. Sad.

For the modern sword aficionado looking for real-world advice, author and pragmatic martial artist Phil Elmore wipes the slate clean with hahahahaha, "real world advice", for Christ sake, you live in fantasy world. What do you know about sword us e in the real world, in what century do you live Phil? the 1600's

Despite attempts by elitists to romanticize, deify or otherwise elevate it into a mystical artifact, I'm elite, thanks My mom will be proud. The sword a mystical artefact, when did that happen? It's mystical to outsiders who never sat a step into a dojo and who watched to many Hollywood and anime movies.

Elmore treats the sword like a tool for delivering force, period. It is a mundane object that obeys the laws of physics, just like any other weapon. If you ever took the time to step into a dojo, you would know that you're not supposed to use force, you need to use speed. It's a cutting weapon Phil, not one of your fantasy LARP adventure hack and slash weapons.

Street Sword will give you a framework in which to use the sword as a functional, practical weapon in today’s violent world, You of all paranoid people should know that the muggers and rapist of today don't carry swords, it's kind of hard to conceal. Don't know about the USA, but in Europe, carrying a sword on the streets will probably get you shot.

simple physics involved, as well as concepts like timing and distance. Go to a dojo, you will learn the real thing. Ohh I forgot, you bought a PC sword from the net, and you became an instant master. We got a word for self proclaimed masters like that: loser.

Reading this book won’t help you win a colored belt or an Olympic fencing medal, It will only get you killed.

but it may be invaluable if a knife-wielding thug ever comes crawling through your bedroom window one dark night Buy a gun or taser. Much faster and way more effective.

5 1/2 x 8 1/2, softcover, photos, 92 pp. 92 pages wasted on BS. What a shame.

Elmore has become widely known in the self-defense and martial arts communities. To bad your rep is as bad as your MA ideas

That's all Phil, now go into the real world and get a life.

With High regards,

Mr. T.

Phewwwwwweeeee.....I doubt if he could hold a katana let alone kill the carbord boxes, or use it as a weed whacker, as he boasts .. I lay a penny to a pinch of s**t. The only thing that that guy does with a knife is cut himself another slice of pie.

Is that a hint of sarcasm Neil? A smidgen perhaps?

I had forgotten about Mr. Elmore: One of the more prominent posters at e-budo. He is of course, one of those people that has all the answers and has to deal with violence and danger on a regular basis: he's a technical writer after all.

I really think this guy got mugged one day and just never got over it. It would explain paranoia to the point of thinking that a sword is a practical self-defense weapon.

Ralph & FHM most probably, the content wasn't/isn't much better, but the pictures were easy on the eyes.
