I don't know how many of you are familiar with Phil Elmore - he's a writer who fancies himself a martial artist. Here's his latest magnum opus: "Street Sword".

I'll have to remember the next time a knife-wielding thug approaches me on the street. I'll tell him that he shouldn't have brought a knife to a gunfight, then I'll plug him between the eyes with a .45ACP. Seriously, does anybody think that they'll be allowed to walk down the street with a sword and won't be hassled, either by a knife-wielding thug or maybe gun-wielding police officers?

Sad through that people are that deluded they would write books like this… I mean it was just the other day I had the dilemma that a knife wielding murderer would crawl through my window.

Thy name is Comedy.
There's been a severe lambasting of him over on Bullshido.com some time ago. (Though you have to register.)
Very entertaining by the way.
He had a review of Cold Steel's Practical Katana on his site (which is amazingly missing) that was pure comedic gold.
He even has his own Wikipedia entry set up by his detractors.

For the modern sword aficionado looking for real-world advice, author and pragmatic martial artist Phil Elmore wipes the slate clean with hahahahaha, "real world advice", for Christ sake, you live in fantasy world. Despite attempts by elitists to romanticize, deify or otherwise elevate it into a mystical artifact, I'm elite, thanks My mom will be proud. The sword a mystical artefact, when did that happen? It's mystical to outsiders who never sat a step into a dojo and who watched to many Hollywood and anime movies.

Elmore treats the sword like a tool for delivering force, period. It is a mundane object that obeys the laws of physics, just like any other weapon. If you ever took the time to step into a dojo, you would know that you're not supposed to use force, you need to use speed. It's a cutting weapon Phil, not one of your fantasy LARP adventure hack and slash weapons.

Street Sword will give you a framework in which to use the sword as a functional, practical weapon in today’s violent world, You of all paranoid people should know that the muggers and rapist of today don't carry swords, it's kind of hard to conceal. Don't know about the USA, but in Europe, carrying a sword on the streets will probably get you shot.

I had forgotten about Mr. Elmore: One of the more prominent posters at e-budo. He is of course, one of those people that has all the answers and has to deal with violence and danger on a regular basis: he's a technical writer after all.

I really think this guy got mugged one day and just never got over it. It would explain paranoia to the point of thinking that a sword is a practical self-defense weapon.
