I give credit where its due in regards to the media and publicity for WAFL football.
But it is nothing short of disgraceful AGAIN, see what I saw in the Sunday Times yesterday. They had a story on the Good Friday game and guess which teams they had playing ? CLAREMONT TIGERS v EAST PERTH ROYALS !! This was in colour and it also had the Claremont Tigers Logo on there for all to see... Of course Claremont are not even playing in the game it is the bloody SUBIACO LIONS YOU MORONS !! Last year was no different when they had East Perth down as Peel Thunder in a game against Souths, on the main scorboard page from the previous days match. You can bet they wouldnt make such a monumental mistake with anything Eagles or Dockers. It is just blatant mediorcrity and contempt for WAFL footy again and basically proves there is little or no proof checking by anyone down there at a so-called proffessional newspaper. It was as bad a cock-up as I have seen for a while. Anyway on the Good Friday game lets hope Subi change the "BRING YOU DOG TO THE FOOTY" day with perhaps a "BRING A HUMAN TO THE FOOTY" day.... Its about time a real focus was put into getting people to bring other PEOPLE to the football instead of your bloody pets. That didnt work a treat on Saturday and we need to get more humans into the football, not dogs.... I understand its a different initiative and all that, but when Broadhurst runs into an open goal and slams home a major, all you see on the TV in the background is a German Shepherd tounging his balls and a stray poodle crunching on a discarded bag of Samboys.... Trying to lift the battered image of the WAFL is hard enough these days without having this stuff to deal with. If the WAFL have a "BRING YOUR CAT TO THE FOOTY" day, Im gonna chuck it in completely I tell you. |

Gasman, I have always thought your postings are close to the mark but I have to disagree with you about dogs at the footy . Its not like it happens every week and for every dog that came in the gate, their was a human or humans with it. The dogs caused no issues throughout the day and doggie dropping bags were handed out. I think this concept will be back next year on a bigger scale and so it should be. WAFL footy was presented to a new audience of people such as dog handlers and stall operators .Well done Subi on trying to promote the game to others and also for theidea of a WAFL game on Good Friday.

Its all true DD.
This sensitive "make everyone a winner" age we live in today will only get more absurd. Im waiting for the "BRING YOUR ONE-LEGGED, ASIAN, HOMOSEXUAL, MUSLIM, CROSS DRESSING, BIKE RIDING, MENTALLY CHALLENGED, BI-POLAR, COMPULSIVE BODY PIERCING FREIND TO THE FOOTY" day... We need to cover all genre's otherwise we might miss somebody. |

I once initiated a promotion for a Subi game. It involved free entry for anyone with a WCE/Sydney membership to the Subi v South game. The AFL game finished an hour or so before our (night) game started.
There were 39,000 people at the AFL game and the promotion got a bit of publicity on the radio. Sadly, of those 39,000, only 72 people bothered to take up the offer. Of course I was never asked to think up a promotion again. lol But I really did think more than 72 people would travel the 1km from Subiaco to Leederville - maybe grab a bite at Leederville on the way. |

Maybe people cant be bothered with 2 games of footy.... Still 72 people equates to an extra $1000 - $1500 for the club so its better than a kick in the ring bensti.
I remember when the Eagles played their first ever game against Richmond at Subiaco Oval in 1987.... We stayed afterwards to watch EP v WP which started at 3pm (The Eagles game started at 12.15pm). Of the 28,000 people who went, about 3,000 stayed to watch the second game. From that day I have always thought combining any AFL - WAFL game is pointless. And it was never repeated again. The key to success for the WAFL is intricut smart fixturing, giving people the opportunity to see WAFL football on the occasional Sunday, and avoiding clashes with WCE and Freo whenever it is humanly possible. I dont think there is too much more that can be done. A tight competition is also bloody helpful. I dont think enough gets done in targeting juniors. I know clubs cant do those parades every week, but that does attract heaps of kids and adults. Perth seem to do one every year when East Perth travel to Lathlain and the attendances there over the past 2 seasons have been very good. It does work.... The WAFL Grand Final has been my biggest bugbear. To constantly have 20,000 empty vacant seats is ridiculous. The hundreds of Junior football clubs should be given every opportunity to fil these seats.... The WAFL missed a golden opportunity for these kids and their parents to witness the best WAFL Grand Final and overall football match at Subiaco in years. TV Ad campains (20 second in your face blasts) need to be tested. But unless the fixturing is adequate, it is pointless. Its got to be done right across the board for TV to have any effect. |

yeah true.
Well I certainly learnt the hard way all those years ago that football supporters in this state will always put the AFL first. A small percentage will occasionally watch the WAFL in there's nothing else on. Thats about it. Sad but true and totally different to the SANFL where they still respect their local comp - at least to some degree. Here, our AFL supporters have forgotten that the WAFL exists. For some the footy (AFL) is just a social occasion where they can get their mug on TV. |

The South Aussies are 100 times smarter than the authorities over here bensti.... They waited and sat back a further 4 years before entering the AFL... They watched how things developed here and made certain they gave the SANFL some chance of retaining credibility. Good on them and even up until this day it has worked out better for them.
As a result SA football is healthier from the core up than football in WA.... Sure they have their problems, but at least the state league has become the best comp outside the AFL.... And I reckon its better than the VFL . The WAFL is actually a potential marketers dream in a business sense. The problem is the WAFL dont bother themselves so what hope does progression have here. |

The AFL game finished an hour or so before our (night) game started. I think Liz Bradley was excellent at Perth organising Junior days and Bouncy Castles. I know we have a laugh about that sometimes but it's a great day out for both adults and kids. I can't think of much better to entertain both and the little kids need more than just a grass bank to roll up and down on. I think she organised face painting as well. Lathlain looks bloody awful right now, the worst I've ever seen it and crowd numbers are down. Lets hope the club starts putting some water on the outer and not just wait for rain and get it looking tip top like it usually does. Come on CEO, lift your game. |

Yeah if people enjoy the day and are well looked after it makes them want to come back for more. Perth really got it together during the time Liz Bradley was at the club in that regard and Swans of course identified this as a key factor in building their crowd numbers years ago.
It takes a while for the benefits to show but word gets around eventually. I look forward to the Bassendean game every year nowadays. Claremont have made more of an effort recently with a bar in the outer and a few others are trying things. East Fremantle are now miles off the pace. No toilets, the outer is invested with ant nests, very little catering and when I went the time clock wasn't operational. |

IMO when it comes to strength, the WAFL is a strong comp. East Perth's performance in the FOXTEL Cup is tantamount to that.
Promotion is indeed key. While a lot of you complain about the lack of exploits of perth & peel, and in particular peels excessive funding and lack of return, perhaps the clubs should be looking at a draft system? Players nominate themselves for it, and the merry-go-round begins! You'd see a greater flow of talent around the league and a more competitive competition. You can't say "who'd want to travel to peel" as an excuse for poor performance, when Perth havent been doing much at all, and they're a 10 minute train ride from the city! |

Great suggestion made in an above post. I reckon that if each club could get their local rag to provide some really good coverge of their local WAFL teams it would not only lift the profile of the WAFL, it would increase the paper's circulation and make the west cast an eye sideways. I know, as a Bombo Valley resident, I would not only read their edition, but I would also be happy to pay to get a copy of whatever paper covered EFFC games.

Not sure what you guys see in bassendean oval. It's a bitch to get there, no trees for shade, and full of bogans. It's one i usually avoid. Are non-members allowed in the bar there? The can bar looks festy on the outer ![]() On other occasions I've stood in between those stands and strolled into the Swans area for a burger and a drink or wandered around the outer. It's one of the easiest grounds to park at and get away from. I think they lead the way with catering and I believe Perth have followed their lead through the great work of Liz Bradley who took on suggestions from members. Their crowds reflect the great way they provide amenities and catering. Basso gets a big tick from me and we owe them a defeat up that way. ![]() |
