Default Best movies of the 21st century
I realy enjoyed American History X

Thought provoking, inspiring and moving how prejudice instilled in an individual can be overcome.

No, its not the BEST EVER, just a very good if not great movie

I dunno if this list qualifies as "best of..." but they do qualify in my book for "pretty damn good".

Syriana - geopolitical thriller. Moral greys.
Munich - ditto
Traffic - similar to the above, but focussing on the drug trade. Moral greys.
Good Night and Good Luck - journalism in its finest hour, standing up to McCarthyism.
Brokeback Mountain - the first (?) gay romance for a mainstream audience
No Country For Old Men - gothic horror in the wild west
Crash - multipolar day-in-the-life of racial tensions

Some movies I want to watch soon: Babel, Slumdog Millionaire, Letters From Iwo Jima.

Six films, Six countries:

The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Lives of Others
Let the Right One In
A Very Long Engagement
Devdas
and, yes, Moulin Rouge

Six more that aren't necessarily great but are among my recent favorites:

Kill Bill Volume 1
Kill Bill Volume 2
Love, Actually
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Goodbye Lenin
House of Flying Daggers

Kill me, but I liked Lost in Translation

Downfall and Memento were great too

I also liked Hurt Locker, the only issue I have about with it is that many american soldiers who fight or used to fight in Iraq say on the internet that the behaviour of the main character is unrealistic and ridiculous.

All those praising Traffic might want to check out "Traffik"- the original TV mini-series it was adapted from. It's very good.

Star Wars Episode II, without a doubt
The best movie ever made.

(I take it everyone has seen the review on youtube by redlettermedia?)

Another vote for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. All the more remarkable because I have a nearly-uncontrollable urge to punch Jim Carrey in the face every time I see him.

Anything, absolutely anything, by Christopher Nolan.

I am SHOCKED that bc1871 didn't say THIS was the greatest movie of the century:

Passchendaele! Britain needed heroes and they called up the Canadians!

.
Now I’ll admit that the film had amazing attention to detail, and superb combat scenes….one small part of the plot, ruined the whole film for me.

When the lead finds out that the woman he is seeing is of German ancestry, being a good officer of the crown he should have immediately tossed her to the curb, rather than continuing his scandalous affair. The fact that he continued to see a woman who was (to quote the film) “Born under the cloud of the German Empire”, would have been a mark of dishonor on him and his regiment.

Historical films and political correctness must never cross paths….and in the instances in which they do, the viewer is always set up for extreme disappointment.

I found "A scanner darkly" very sad. It was clearly the ravings of a desperately sick man.

Two other good ones here-

"Perfume: The story of a murderer"

"Brotherhood of the wolf"

"Forgetting Sarah Marshall" is mindless pap, but I love Russell Brand, and the closing scene of Jason Segal's puppet-musical is great. Many have informed me that this movie actually sucks, but I've found myself watching it when it pops up on a channel scan, so I guess I have a weakness for lowbrow guilty pleasures like this, Ocean's Eleven, and Wedding Crashers.

But at least I admit it.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall is ****ing hilarious, and I find it inexplicable that people don't enjoy it.

Yeah, you gotta get past that and focus on the girls he dates -- Mila Kulis and Kristin Bell.

Kristen Bell has a couple freaky comedic sex scenes in the movie. Bonus.

Any list of top movies that does not include Crash will be hereby considered for inclusion.
I was waiting for somebody else to say it, but yes. What kind of weenie actually wants to spend two damned hours of his life thinking about race relations in America? It was like watching the media babble surrounding the Obama campaign, only people were apparently supposed to pay money to see it, and found it entertaining to boot. Baffling.
