As far as I know, the missing piece is that Google is not indemnifying the industry for use of VP8 once MPEG LA starts going after VP8 users for patent infringement.

http://windowsteamblog.com/windows/b...eo-in-ie9.aspx

Microsoft will support VP8 codec, as long as the system has one installed. This is not unsurprising -- the implementation of video in IE9 is a DirectShow/Windows Media Foundation component that uses system codecs.

Theoretically it'll support every codec as long as you install it on your system.

http://arstechnica.com/web/news/2010...-with-webm.ars

Broadcom's chipset for mobile video acceleration (which the vast majority of phones use) will support WebM acceleration by Q3 this year.

AMD, ARM, NVIDIA, and Qualcomm (the largest mobile SoC vendor) are all collaborating on HW acceleration as well for WebM.

As predicted, Steve Jobs has given the thumbs down to WebM.

But remember, guys, APPLE IS ALL ABOUT BEING OPEN ON THE WEB.

Just not with WEB CONTENT.

In typical ******* fashion, all he did was reply to the question with the link to the x264 developer's anti-VP8 rant linked above in this thread.

Looks like I can Steve Jobs job, so can I please get paid Steve Jobs' wage?
Actually, I am pretty sure you can't. He is one of the few CEO types who are actually worth their salary.

JM
(And I even often disagree with him/etc, but the effect he has on people is definitely worth his salary.)

His protectionist policies aren't great for the world but are generally proving to be good financially for Apple. (I think)

Yeah. He wants to be absolute gate keeper who decides what people with Apple hardware can or cannot buy using those devices. That makes Apple money but I'd be pissed if I was a customer. Who wants to be forced to only buy stuff from just one store, the store Apple owns? Still, Apple has tons of fanboys who will do anything Steve Jobs tells them to do so I guess he doesn't have to care about competition.

Been testing this in the Firefox 4 nightly builds. add &webm=1 to YouTube URLs on any supporting browser and it'll play.

Even plays 720p fullscreen with the HTML5 player (no Flash): http://yfrog.com/f/mg22rp/
