I commented to my older brother that he's at least done a good job of making sure the potholes get fixed after the big snowstorm to which he replied: "lol the trains run on time LOL"

Recognizing the past is stupid? I guess the winners get to write history.

Think of the confeds as the Na'vi, not Na'zi. Those imperial sons of b1tches ruined their simple way of life with authority from the man.

No?

Come on Ecofarm, what are these "economic" causes of the civil war that overshadow slavery?

This has been argued many times here, but since I haven't told you yet, I will tell you now.
It was about slavery, from the North's pov. In the South, it was all about Northern arrogance, not slavery. I'm not going to argue about it. Not going to try and educate anyone. I'm done.

State's economic rights. The south was not being allowed to sell cotton directly to europe.

Look, I'd like to think the "good guys" won too, but change just happens. Freedom was part (% I dunno) of the civil war. Just like it's part of US middle east wars.

It's ****ing stupid from a political and policy perspective.
Go on. I'm interested in hearing the reasons for this strong assertion.

There is only one outcome here. Some hardcore right-wing southern conservatives are happy, at the expense of pissing off a whole lot of other people. It probably will end up hurting the Republican party a bit nationally, and it'll hinder McDonnell's efforts to do things that he actually needs to do, like fix the state's budget. Which he hasn't gotten around to doing yet.

Given that it has no practical outcome for anyone except to tick people off, it was a dumb move.

Who actually cares about this ****? Canada has an active separatist movement, for god's sake, yet they don't anguish themselves over it like Americans do over a war that ended 145 years ago...
In America we generally like the losers to shut up and not revel in their loss like a bunch of idiots.

Maybe you're right, but my irritation is mostly at the fact that this could very well be at the expense of useful things getting done.

I think you overestimate the extent most people give a **** about the issue. Well beyond people who are paid to get outraged about things like this anyway. It probably will end up hurting the Republican party a bit nationally, In what fashion? It hasn't before. and it'll hinder McDonnell's efforts to do things that he actually needs to do, like fix the state's budget. Which he hasn't gotten around to doing yet. How would it do that?

Let the South have this. It's not like they have anything else.
If only your brethren shared the same sentiment and quit moving here.

I propose that every time a Southern state tries something like this, a Northern state senate should vote on a resolution declaring Col. Sherman a hero. That'll learn 'em.

True, but they haven't fought a four-year-long war over a separatist movement like we did. Their separatists just want to vote themselves out. I don't think the Quebecois are about to take up arms and burn down Ottawa.
