Default Name history's top 5 generals:
1) General Winter

Have to think about the rest.

Alexander
Caesar
Hannibal
Scipio
Belisarius

Honorable mention

Cortez
Napoleon
Atius

I usually rate them by the quality of their opponents. Napoleon would be higher, but he did have Russia and Waterloo.

Another great one: Hitler - could pull entire armies out of his ass.

I'm not a Caesarian expert, but IIRC, he was greatly outnumbered in Gaul.

Part of the efficiency of Hannibal of course can also be attributed to his use of war elephants.
They seem to have really frightened the romans (although the romans already encountered war elephants in their battles against Pyrrhus). Only later in the war they seem to have learned tactics to counter an elephant charge (finally making Hannibals war elephants useless at Zama)

Imagine how badly the Confederates might have lost without Lee...

All the German WWII generals lost, Napoleon lost, Hannibal etc. Are they now crap because they ended up on the losing side...?

What I know of him is that he seemed very capable as a battlefield general. Most of the time he was up against vastly superior forces and still held his own for the most part.

Certainly better than Stalin...

Certainly better than Stalin... Pah

just think how the SU would have crumbled if there officers hadn't been massacred or their troops were allowed to retreat when faced with imminent destruction.
