LONG before I shaved my head, long before I started talking about Buddhism....
People would ask me if I knew martial arts, were even insistent I did. God only knows why. Must be a inner-confidence thing. But what is the "need" for hair? It is for security. Observe what girls do, and you'll understand this. They feel very insecure if their hair looks bad, and they feel a little bit secure when it looks good. So they spend an awful lot of effort on their hair. But there's a deeper reason to shave off your hair and eyebrows. I could say a lot, but I could also probably just leave it at "Conversation starter". But one thing I've already noted; Hair and eyebrows are awfully drippy!!!! Like you're having a shower and when you take your head out from under the shower faucet, you need to wipe the water from your eyebrows to keep it out of your eyes. I was surprised to discover I no longer needed to do that! I'm already happy to be not carrying around a (potentially) soggy mass on my head. |

People would ask me if I knew martial arts, were even insistent I did. The ultimate non sequitur. But what is the "need" for hair? It is for security. Observe what girls do, and you'll understand this. They feel very insecure if their hair looks bad, and they feel a little bit secure when it looks good. So they spend an awful lot of effort on their hair. Just because many girls obsess over hair doesn't mean everyone who has hair overvalues it. One day you will learn it is possible to be a perfectly good person who understands his limitations and what to value, without subscribing to bullcrap Buddhism and shaving your head and snuffing rock gardens. |

Is it purely symbolic? In ancient Greece and Rome, beards was the symbol of philosophers. They had a practical argument though: 1.God or nature gave us hair for a reason(beards to distinguish males from females, young from old )2. It was hard to shave back then.
They would also argue that even if there were no practical reasons, over the centuries it had become symbol of the philosopher, and this was reason enough to continue the tradition. There was value in symbol Perhaps people had a lice problem in Buddha's time...but the symbolism stuck through the centuries. |

That question can put almost anything into perspective. |
