Everything has a right and a wrong way to do it doesn't it?

Open. I have pretty good night vision.

The strange things is when I am looking for my glasses, I have terrible eyes so I keep them closed, because it helps me feel my way around to them. I had always tried it with them open (and with extra light so I could see the glasses better), until I realized I wasn't seeing the glasses, I would feel them and then put them on.

But there is CERTAINLY darkness in the countryside. I've lived much of my life in a rural farmhouse.

I can say; eyes closed, when there is genuinely no light. It makes it easier to focus on the other senses. The stars and the moon can be very bright though, especially with no polution.

The moon is not always up, and sometimes it gets cloudy.

When the clouds are so heavy as to be black during the day time, that results in one dark night.

edit: Then again, maybe people in some cities don't think of cloud cover as a natural, non-pollution, phenomena .

Animals manage. How many cats do you see walking around outside with their eyes shut?

Eyes open ... I think.
If it's a well known place, where I'm used to go and if it is about to get something, I trust my feet and hands. They usually know better than me where things are or how to find them. My eyes are irrelevant and do whatever they want. I think in most cases they stay open.
I remember a power shortage by a friend. We had to go down the stairs in the dark. The friend was going down with extreme care, 'probing' with his foot to find each step.
I proceeded as usual: when there is light, I do not look where I need to put my feet. Although I am completely unable to say how many steps, when it is a well known staircase, my feet know the average distance between the steps and when it is the last one. Why should I behave differently when there is light than when there's none.
So, I pretend there is light and I use my instinctive/bodily knowledge of the place.
