Default Totems of the state
Carp, I think, for Japan. For Germany, a hawk or eagle, not sure which bird is referenced in their WWII symbology.

French Tickler When talking politics, I can say 'the Bear', and everyone will understand what country I'm talking about. Will this work with 'the Bull'?

Better than our rodent or your scavenger. Benjamin Franklin didn't want the eagle for that very reason. He wanted us to adopt the more virtuous turkey.

Lions and eagles are the most common animals in heraldry. Lions have been part of the swedish kings coat of arms since the days of Erik Knutsson in the early 1200's.

I had heard that before.

People defend the beaver ("He's industrious", etc) and I have to laugh. It's a water rat people. Get over it.
