British English is self-righteous. American English... doesn't have a prevailing characteristic.

Feel free to comment my impressions and add your own. It all depends on perspective, in addition to very specific dialectic differences.

If you speak "Queen's" English, then standard American, Estuary, Cockney, Yorkshire, Australian and more all sound lazy. If you speak Australian English, then BBC talk sounds pompous. To Americans, angry Germans sound like Adolf Hitler. To Germans, some Americans sound as if they have hot potatoes in their mouths. To Thai folks, Americans sound harsh, with lots of kkhhs, ssshh, and thhs. To northern Americans, southern Americans sound like hicks. To southern Americans, northern Americans sound like nitwits.

It's all perspective.
