Default Problems installing MS .net framework on Vista
http://www.grimes.demon.co.uk/dotnet/vistaAndDotnet.htm

I found this and am still reading it and trying to make sense of it.

Windows Vista comes with .NET 3.0, which is backwards compatible with 2.0 and 1.1 and 1.0.

The NWN error is because the developers didn't follow the Windows Guidelines, apparently.

More of a victim of the game developers, who apparently do not follow guidelines.

When you change the fundamental pillars of your operating system, games relying on quirks in the old systems will not work without being fixed.

There are very specific developer guidelines for Windows and DX, and if you follow those guidelines you are guaranteed future compatibility.

A lot of developers -- game developers in particular -- rely on quirky behaviour to accomplish something out of laziness.

Mostly it's just laziness. SMAC had a basic, awful, unsupported check for OSes, for example.

Well, NWN2 has been out for a while now (up to 6 months) and they've said they're not going to be releasing any more patches. I wanted to try the last patch out and see if they've fixed any more bugs and optimized the code any more but I'm not sure I'll get the chance without setting up a dual boot with XP option. Is that even possible with Vista?

I tried to reinstall but Vista wouldn't even let me do that for some reason. When I get home I'll try to reinstall one last time and if that doesn't work then I'll give up until the expansion pack comes out in a few months.
