Between Indians going over seas looking for jobs and the relatively new effects of globalization which has created huge numbers of relatively high paying jobs India is running out of skilled workers. The outsourcing which western trade unions hate so much is actually spurring a great deal of economic development and investment into places like India helping to lift living standards and wages.
![]() This does expose one of India's major failings though. If you are good enough to get into elite schools then you can get a world class education in India. If you're not part of the elite though then the system really lets you down. The literacy rate is only 61% among adults and 73% among youth compared to China's 91% and 99% for the same groups. The west and Japan have virtually complete literacy. India needs to treat it's average citizen better and teach more children (especially girls) how to read. |
