For regular drinking, one glass of red wine a day is recommanded. Good for health. However, I rarely drink on a daily basis (and when I do, I'm not sure it's in moderation
![]() I guess one glass of beer a day is okay as well, no problem there. For party drinking, I wouldn't know what "reasonable" is. I actually never wondered ![]() |

Says who? I've hear it repeated often enough on telly, in health-related programs. Apparently, it has been found by doctors. Edit: found something recent. A dutch team has surveyed 1373 people born between 1900 and 1920 (the survey had been occuring between 1960 and 2000). They noticed that those who drank moderately everyday had a life expectancy 3.8 years longer than the others on average. Red wine is particularly good in this regard, because not only does it have the good aspects of alcohol (when drank moderately), it has also specific components that are good for health. Wine-drinkers have, on average, a life expectance longer by 2 years over those who drink another form of alcohol. The scientists advise one to two glasses of alcohol, preferably red wine, a day. This study confirms something that is already widely known in France, because any such study tends to get publicity over here ![]() |

BTW my understanding is besides the various compounds found in alcoholic drinks besides alcohol (flavinols, etc), which have their own positive health effects, there is also the positive health effect of alcohol itself. Namely, that alcohol helps to prevent harding of the arteries. Alcohol dehydrates you and causes all your cells to shrink, that is lise, and causes a slight drop in blood pressure along with a moderate thinning of the blood. The shrinking and re-expanding of cells & arteries helps prevent them from harding while the slight drop in blood pressure other effects are also positive to preventing heart attacks.
