And what should it be called until then? I, for one, have taught my children the correct names for their body parts from the get-go. And that's all well and good. YOU did that. With YOUR kids.

This is about what's done in/by the school, which is another matter.

I was hoping more people would chime in using other euphemisms for a woman's love tunnel.

Lots of plays have elements that certain kids can't understand. We read Romeo and Juliet freshman year of high school - and Dante's Inferno senior year - I know there were kids in both classes that didn't get the material but that doesn't mean it wasn't worthwhile to try and appreciate it.

So, Arrian, how old should a child be before they can hear the proper name for a woman's cootch? How about each parent decides that instead of the school system?

So, we shouldn't teach basic biology in public schools? What exactly should schools teach? 'Cause I ain't havin' no kid if I gots to teach 'em everythin'.

-Arrian So until it is brought up by the school, it should just be ignored? If students ask questions are they referred to a later health course and told to shut up about it until then? Or do we use some demeaning slang term for genitals until some magic age is reached at which we can expose the children to the truth (which will be too late, by the way, because the demeaning slang term will have taken hold at that point).

It's a vagina. Vagina is not a bad word - it is the correct word.

I'm just a foot soldier in the war to protect vagina.

Oh, wait, that sounds odd...

"My short skirt is a liberation flag..." WTF? That should not have been read at a public school. Not because it's obscene (it isn't), but because it's stupid. I never read the Vagina Monologues, since I gathered from the title that it would be, well, a lot of clunky no-talent radical-feminist crap such as the excerpt in question. IT'S A BODY PART. PENIS GOES IN. BABIES AND BLOOD COME OUT. THAT'S ABOUT IT. DON'T MAKE ME RECITE THE FIVE-ACT OPERA I MADE UP ABOUT MY COLON. Sheesh.

Drix, subtlety isn't everything. I liked you better as RoboCon.

plenty of atheists don't give their kids the talk either

in fact, I haven't noticed it to have any correlation with religiousity... which implies that there is no relation

It's a vagina. Vagina is not a bad word - it is the correct word. I would appreciate it if you read what I wrote. Carefully.

I've repeatedly said that this incident was ridiculous. I also agree with you that, as the "proper" word for that particular body part, it shouldn't been kept from kids.

I made a distinction, however, between mentioning the term (either in biology class or sex ed class or wherever else the body part naturally comes up) and performing/discussing the Vagina Monologues. Personally, were I a parent I'd be fine with the VM presented/discussed in highschool. Others may feel differently (some might think middleschool is appropriate; others may think that it's not appropriate at all, I don't know).
