Maybe it isn't, but when you take over your #1 competitor it feels predatory to me. Also see their cartload of betas as a manner of claiming territory. I understand where you're coming from. On the other hand, Google has mostly stayed away from this, at least in an objectionable manner -- claiming large chunks of territory without offering something new to the marketplace. And to be fair to Google, even when it claims territory, it may not have much impact in the marketplace, such as happened with Google Video (for which I still have some small affection despite its flaws, by the way). Google Video had such a small market share that it doesn't seem like much competition, after all. One potential danger is that Google as a search engine and advertising network has very precise information on how fast these services are growing and how users are interacting with these services. |
