Default Firewalls
I think Zone Alarm is fine. I use Sygate Pro, but never had a problem really with Zone Alarm, and it's reviewed well at places like download.com
Tiny Personal Firewall is rated highly too, but to me it was a huge pain in the ass.

Nothing like having the fox guarding the chicken house, Kuci.
I wouldn't trust it on a bet.

Really, most copies of Windows are set to the default of download and install Critical Windows Updates. If they wanted to do something, they very easily could. It seems silly to mistrust Windows Firewall for that reason.

Because I don't want to.
It isn't so much that I think Microsoft will spy on me, but rather I don't have confidence in their ability to write a good firewall.

Also, to my knowledge, the Windows firewall in Windows XP does not act on anything for outbound traffic.

That's odd, since it complains all the time "application X is trying to connect to the internet: approve/deny?"

It should, but that's not my point. I believe in checks and balances. I have 2 different programs for a lot of tasks.

I also specifically use it to block... certain programs on my wireless connection so that I don't go over the bandwidth cap by accident.

Sadly, my NAT no longer provide such security, since I'm on a huge network (and I'm pretty sure it isn't NATed anyway).

Except from one of the thousands of independently owned and maintained computers on the local network.

You could probably still pick up one of those commodity routers from the store and plug it in, and get the same level of protection that you'd get if there was nobody else on your network.

Or I could not care and use the free Symantec security

Plus I'm on the wireless network a lot of the time.

Can't get you screenshots cos I don't use it
