I am interested in studying theology, and I've been wondering which University/Academy/Seminar would be the best choice.
I've also been wondering if it would be possible to study in Greece, (Athens or ThessalonĂ*ki) even though I do not speak Greek language (yet!). Languages have always occupied a place among my main interests and I am a fast learner; however it seems that there are absolutely no resources on the internet on how I could, as an English-speaker, study theology in Greece. Please, share your information! |

Alex, the main theological school that I've heard of Americans attending is in Thessaloniki. You can try contacting:
Fr. Peter Heers (American, living in Halkidiki now outside Thessaloniki). He has a podcast on ancientfaithradio.com entitled "Postcards from Greece" and I believe you can email him via the website. Fr. Luke Hartung (American priest of Holy Dormition in The Dalles, OR). Here is his contact info from the local newspaper: Dormition of the Theotokos Orthodox Church 541-296-3267 1520 Webber Street, The Dalles Or, you can contact him through uncutmountain.com which he runs. Both of them attended seminary in Thessaloniki. If they can't help you directly I think they could point you to someone who could. Good luck pursuing this. If I were young and male it would be my dream, too! In Christ, Macrina |

To study Theology at the university of Athens or Thessaloniki you can apply for a scholarship from either the Greek Foreign Ministry or the Holy Synod. You can contact Mr G. Tsonis at the Ecclesiastical Affairs Department of the Foreign Ministry for more information. The phone number is +30 210 368 2299 and Fax: +30 210 368 2313.
The scholarships include 1 year of learning the Greek language. Applications usually have to be in by the end of July so although it is too late for this year...there is always next year. If you would like more info, feel free to PM me. Julia |
