Default Missing Drivers
So I have windows Vista and I am missing a Driver for my microphone, I was wondering if there is anything that is freeware that I can use to get it back and running.

If not, if I upgrade to windows 7 will it fix everything?

Have you tried updating the driver from Device Manager? Vista should be able to recognize that there should be a driver, but its not installed.

Or, visit your computer manufacturer's website. You should be able to look up your computer model, as well as drivers for devices that are with the computer.

OR, if your computer came with a driver CD, try loading it up and see if your mic's driver file is included in it and install from there.

I'd pretty much advise not throwing away 100$+ for Windows 7 upgrade, unless you bought your computer sometime after July 2009 and you qualify for a free one. I personally don't feel the price is worth it. Driver would probably still be missing, and you aren't missing out on a whole lot.

Well, the Device Manager is tiered, with a list of categories for devices, and the actual devices inside of each category. Any devices that are not working/not started will have a little caution icon next to the device name (which the mic probably is called something like "Base System Device", etc right now, since it doesn't work). When you open Device Manager, any categories that are already open with devices marked with an icon next to them, update by right-clicking the device name, and then clicking "Update Driver Software". After, you'll receive a prompt asking how you wish to update, select "Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software". Your mic driver is probably under the "Sound, video and game controllers" category.

The problem is when I use my YouCam there is no sound, but it is saying that everything is fine with my microphone.

So it looks like it comes as a software bundle. Try redownloading/reinstalling it?

we first need to figure out if the mic or youcam is the problem.

Can you record something using your mic?

It's the mic. Since it didn't record when I did the recording on the computer. Gah this bugs the crap out of me.

Is the mic built in to the computer? If its not, can you test the mic on another machine? If the driver is installed and working normally, it could be the jack.

yeah then go ahead and check your computer manfacturer's website, they should have the mic driver available to download. Or you might have a disc.

What brand is the laptop?

Find what type of mic; visit their website; download the appropriate driver.

And THEN you do the funky chicken.

Start with mic's manufacturer. Look it up, and visit their website directly.

If you have a driver CD that came with your laptop (which most usually do), you could load the driver that way too.

If all else fails, here's Dell's support page for your laptop.
