Anyone know for how long Pollo Victorina has been around? Most seem to like their food and find their prices reasonable. I know that I ate in one of their restaurants as far back as 1987. This means that they were a survivor of previous financial downturns and were able to compete with relative newcomers like KFC and Church's. What does that say about the current downturn, then?

i don't know what is happening out in the sticks, but pollo victorina seems to be business as usual in the capital.
it may be paying all its money over to the bank, but it won't close, not for a while yet (er....that's my prediction, i don't have anything to substantiate it). the same, it is said, has happened to plaza lama. kentucky fried chicken was here many years ago, went and then came back again in the 90's. they and some other american fast food places will probably do the same disappearing/reappearing act again. that type of business, though, is having problems all over the world, not just in the d.r. |

AZB, just out of curiosity as I haven't myself been able to get back to Santiago in five or six months, what's the main problem with PV, KFC, etc. No customers because the food is priced too high now? High rents? High taxes? Increased electricity, water, employee, raw product costs? Probably all of the above. Are the restaurants pretty much empty then?

Don Crisco,
Not that I am too familiar with their operation, but I doubt your statement about all their food being local. If you think about it: 1.chicken feed is mostly imported for most poultry farmers. Hard to believe but it is true. For as long as I have lived here (10 years plus), I know for fact that imported feed has always been cheaper and better than the locally produced version. Cost of production for locally grown feed (alimento) is too high in comparison to that of imported from the U.S. Mostly because of the subsidies. Go to Puerto Plata and see the quantity of feed that comes in weekly. 2.The amount of fuel that they use for distribution must run into the mega bucks. I see their trucks running around all over the country. How about the generators? Their refrigeration cost must be horrendous whether they buy fuel for their own generators or buy power from the distributors. Think about the propane gas for cooking! 3.Parts for their equipment is also another thing. All their restaurant equipment, refrigeration equipment, vehicles, poultry equipment and who knows what else is all imported. I may be wrong but I think most of their input is directly or indirectly imported. Oh I forgot. They have to buy jet fuel and chopper parts also. Executives zip around the country in a fancy helicopter. |

Geez, AZB, that's terrible if true.
I really liked Pollo Victorina. We just rented a nice house in a quiet neigbhorhood in Santiago so we'd have someplace to retreat when living out here in the sticks on the NC got to be too much and we needed a break in a real city. I was looking forward to a little fast food again, and especially Pollo Victorina from time to time. Ah well. Another of the little pleasure's that make life fun taken away. ![]() |

It makes GabyCruz send me threatening and highly humorous (unintentionally I am sure) personal messages. Anyone else, or I am just special? LOL.
BTW, GC, did you understand the Latin quote I posted in the forum where you were attacking Hillbilly's knowledge and credentials in the D.R. Find someone to translate it for you and learn something. Robert, I agree, but some of us have done our share. I do not wish to spend the rest of my life fighting everyone else's battles for them. I just want some more of that wonderful dipping sauce from P.V. You think they'd part with the recipe for that? The problem here is that folks don't understand that responsible government requires responsible voters. This the D.R. does not have. GC is a prime example being ignorant of his own country's history. People like that gave Hippo the keys to the car and all the credit cards, he and his cronies wrecked Papi B's auto and maxed out the cards, and now that the whole house of cards is crumbling whine for help. Too late. I didn't make this mess, and I ain't helping clean it up. |

I have heard from a banker that Pollo Victorina has gone broke and turned over their operations to a bank (?). With the raising dollar/peso exchange rate, they just couldn't keep up.
They are just one of the many businesses who have closed down or are about to go broke. Ferreteria M&M (do it best) is closed and instead Ochoa are opening up there. car dealerships mark dollar prices on cars now. No one is buying them anyway so dealers are going broke. Constructions have stopped all over santiago. Black outs are putting the last nails in the coffen before the hell breaks loose. Restaurants are empty and disco / bars have people inside that you could count on your fingers. francifol cafe put on a huge presidente show last night, brought beautiful venezuelan model girls and 3 puerto-rican sexy dancers. it was full to the max but how many people were actually buying drinks? Not many. How long would it take for a complete collaspe of the economy? Not many days as I have heard the gasoline prices will raise again to 57-58 pesos for the cheap gas. anyone wants to buy a jeepita with V8 engine? |

Pollo Victorino is my favorite fast food place in the DR.
After PV it's Pollo Licey. AZB, are they closing up before September? Maybe I'll get a last supper there in September. I remember that on my first trip to Santo Domingo I shared Pollo Victorina with my sister-in-law's family. It has sort of become a little tradition to have a meal there on each trip. Yes, take out, of course. Another one of my "cuņadas" lives on Calle Mexico just (a few floors) above PV. I don't know how many times I have used it as a point of referrence with Dominicans who are from (or lived in) the capital. Pollo Victorina, I just hope that El Dragon de Oro isn't next. JD |
