I for one do not think at this time that SARS is as dangerous as the media is playing it up to be. I believe their fear and that of health officials is a uncertainty of no vaccine to arrest its spread. We have more of a threat from the flu.
My health concern about traveling to and from the D.R. is being confined in a bus or plane and exposed to drug resistant TB. I am willing to think that TB is more of risk factor to travelers in the D.R. than SARS. Regards, PJT |

Hysteria at it finest!
More people will die from the flu this year then from SARS. 15 dead and 400 infected? That is not even a statistic. That is a pimple on the butt of the worlds infectious diseases. If they do find a case of SARS in the DR i can't wait to see tha run on "Designer" surgical masks! |

I heard that SARS was even worse than Alar sprayed on apples, and more risky than eating Chilean grapes or taking a Tylenol. It has been reported that the one million American missing children are under threat of exposure. It's outbreak in America and Canada could even exceed recent outbreaks of bubonic plague. Whether it would be relatively more dangerous than having SkyLab fall on you remains to be seen.
Never let the truth (or a basic understanding of statistics) stand in the way of a good, media-driven panic. SARS would ravage Haiti and the DR if it arrived. That's why it makes sense to try and prevent it. But the next major flu epidemic will kill the exact same elderly and infirmed people people in Haiti, the DR, and American and Canada, though it is always worse in poor countries. |

And it would be Torontonians not Torontoans. Or Torontians as in the subject line that you wrote. You really haven't a clue about how limited this problem was at all really do you? And how well it was managed by the health community including help from CDC and WHO. Your comment about the poor Dominicans (and mentioning 8 million is all of them - it may be more than all of them) is just mean - why do you hate them so much? Then stay or live there? |

That Russia has closed 1000 miles of border with China and has stopped all air traffic to China. And I am just too panicky???
As to those worrying about DR being in the no-travel list, by the time SARS gets to us, the whole world will be unfit for travel. I sure don't want to be a Toronto Blue Jay player. Are Canadian tourists coming to DR going to be quarantined or inspected at the airport? It wouldn't be a bad idea. I rather have empty hotels than hospitals full of infected people. TW |

Make enough of these sorts of claims and you will find the country on the travel advisory "avoid" list. Please clarify, arturo. Which country will be on the "avoid" list: the DR because golo is raising questions about the implications of sars in Toronto to the health of the tourist enterprises in Canada, or Canada because it has a sars problem? |

For once, I agree with Tony C. I've heard how some in the US are not going to the beach. etc. because they are afraid of it. What's the matter with these people? There are no proven cases of infection yet in the US, they are so hysterical. These are the same people that still won't fly a year after 9/11... must suck to live in fear.

Thanks for your offer. I would not go to Toronto with or without SARS. Even with a free ticket and all expenses paid, plus a ticket to the World Series for me and my entourage, if the Blue Jays ever make it again, I would not consider traveling to hinterlands.
My last bout with artic weather was with Chicago. But there are a million miles of difference between Chicago and Toronto. I would consider visiting Chicago again, but Toronto is not Chicago. Its not even close. When you have nasty weather, you have to offer lots of class, something Toronto is missing. Toronto is a hick town converted into a city. I take Santo Domingo any day with this beautiful weather. So save your invitation. I am not a destitute person looking for a job to be interested in the North. Save your invitation for the 8 million tigueres and chopos in DR who need a job, and need some cash to build a hut with blocks and zinc roof. But I would rather Torontoans stay there for a while. I dont give a f-ck about tourism in this situation. I rather be safe than sorry. TW |

TW Are you so deperate for continued attention to this Golo that you resuscitate it with some more garbage? If you don't live in Toronto please take my advice from all Torontotonians, don't come here until the risk is over, in your case, say 50 years should do. (If you are 20 or younger make it 70 years). That keeps you safe and we don't have to have you in our city. If you could read the facts you would know that other than the index cases which were mainly Asian nationals, the main impact was on the health care workers attending to them. The new cases are over, the WHO says there is no risk, the CDC said there never was and quarantining tourists arriving from a country of 30,000,000 and a city of 5,000,000 where 200 people were affected and no new cases are noted is just stupid. As are these attempts at rabble-rousing so cut it out and go away. The risk of dengue , polio or malaria is the DR are statistically higher and I'm not worried about any or all of the 3. |
