I put 'word of mouth' as my answer: I was working in the UK HQ of an international development agency, on the Latin America and Caribbean section, with a special interest in the Caribbean since I first visited DR and Haiti in January 1996. In 1998, one of my colleagues in Santo Domingo sent me the web address so that I could have a quick daily link in English to news from the DR, and for some time I visited most days. I remember it was a particular help during the time of Hurricane Georges where we needed up to date information at our fingertips in order to coordinate the emergency response, keep our colleagues, the media, donors and the public informed about the fast-changing and confused situation. So in that way at least DR1 played an important part in getting help to the victims.
I moved to the DR in 1999, but I didn't discover the forums until late last year... I wish I'd found them earlier on as it would have helped me through some of the earlier stages of adaptation! Chirimoya |

Back in 1998 I noticed I could no longer find copies of the Santo Domingo News around town. One of my students told me that they thought that it had gone to a web version, abandoning print. I did a search for Santo Domingo News and found DR1, started by Dolores to replace SDN. I've been involved with DR1 in one way or another ever since....
