Default a bigger minority?
Without proportional representation we have no democracy. None. It's like pregnancy: you can't be a little bit pregnant.

We're still governed by a "party" that doesn't care for culture or the environment . . . for starters. And they're in power because 38% of voters chose them. And only 59% of the population voted. I feel sick.

I highly recommend checking out Fair Vote Canada. Or join the Facebook group.

With a fair, democratic system and the votes cast yesterday, Harper still would have won but this is how seats would have been allocated:

Conservatives - 38% of the popular vote: 117 seats (not 143)
Liberals - 26% of the popular vote: 81 seats (not 76)
NDP - 18% of the popular vote: 57 seats (not 37)
Bloc - 10% of the popular vote: 28 seats (not 50)
Greens - 7% of the popular vote: 23 seats (not 0)

I agree with you that First Past the Post is not a good system but Proportional Rep isn't really the answer either. Single Transferable Vote is a good solution (as suggested by the BC Citizens Assembly a years back) and I think it's only a matter of time until we adopt it.

A wee bit ironic that Harper's off the cuff artist comments meant he lost Quebec and a majority. Probably the first time artists have had such a big role in deciding the makeup of government.
