Been a bit lazy getting this group of photos together. I've had to go through almost 500 from the trip and I just finished today!
Near Kiyomizu-dera is a popular walking street, Ninenzaka. This area is another historic part of town that retains much of the flavor of the old days except that the shops are more modern. Even early in the morning it was busy. ![]() We stopped for an early lunch of yodofu (essentially boiled tofu) at this lovely restaurant set in huge garden. This was the view from our table! What is remarkable is that this is in a busy cityscape and yet you wouldn't know it - all you can see is the garden. ![]() The next temple we visited was Kodaiji built by Kitano Mandokoro in honor of her husband Toyotomi Hideyoshi after his death. He succeeded in uniting Japan and after his death she became a holy woman and took the name Toyotomi Nene. They are both actually buried on the grounds in a memorial hall. The gardens are lovely and there are two famous tea houses on the property as well. ![]() A large dry garden is a more recent fixture. ![]() This temple, along with Kiyomizu-dera and other temples, is located on the edge of Higashiyama (East Mountain). Here is a view of the garden's forest blending into the mountain's forest. ![]() Lots to show, but this series of posts could become a book! One more set to go, Chion-in with its immense gate house. |
