As soon as i got to my LI summer place, I rushed out to check the garden...and this is what I found sitting in the middle of my bog garden. I was excited....I haven't seen a box turtle in about 2 years. They used to be much more common, but between cars, dogs , and raccoons, they have gotten scarce. This one is intact...has all its legs and an unscarred shell...unlike far to many of the turtles that remain out here. It was sitting in the middle of the bog garden, just munching away on a mushroom. It didn't mind my being there, just ate away. Wandered off when the mushroom was finished. Of course, it sat right on top of my Epipactis gigantea, and shoved aside my Sarracenia leucophyllum "Tarnok"...but I forgive it. Despite the red eyes, I believe that its a female, based on its small tail...hopefully it laid a nest of eggs here. Take care, Eric

Me either. I'm very worried about all the turtles, newts, amd frogs that inhabit the wilds of the Catskills now that it has become a fashionalbe weekend area. Maybe the poor economy will slow the growth of those areas and let some of nature survive.

Very cool! I havent seen one of those in the wild in 40 years. Here we do get the "snapping turtle run" each spring when they move from the woods to the ponds.

Wow. These guys are everywhere down here, getting run over left and right.

Growing up in Los Angeles though, you only saw them in pet stores, and I thought they were pretty exotic at that time.

I've seen one in our pond a few times. Any turtles you don't want (except snappers), send them to me!
