Hey Steve, I wonder if your problem accessing the concerts could be computer- or software-related.
I didn't actually have time to try the site out when I posted the links about it yesterday, but I've just tried listening to few concerts and have been able to do so. In fact, I'm now listening to a February 1982 concert by the Claude Ranger Quintet. I'm on a Mac. In clicking on a few other concerts at the site, I did get messages that they were unavailable at this time due to financial considerations, but several concerts are available now. It's true that the performances are out of Toronto and that few of the musicians are from the West Coast. Besides Brad Turner, I noticed Campbell Ryga. Regardless, this site seems like a treasure trove of Canadian jazz performances, and I thought forum members and others would be interested in checking it out. |

Ben,
I haven't been able to play any of them either, and I've tried on two different computers (both PCs). A real disappointment, would have loved to see the Claude Ranger clip, and numerous others. Also, at the risk of sounding like a broken record (and echoing Steve's concerns about a lack of West Coast representation) the print-archive portion of the site is, quite frankly, a disgrace. Not to mention a waste of tax dollars (note the government logos and Can/Con support). For instance I was thrilled to see a concert featuring my old pal Toronto pianist Connie Maynard, but not only was the clip unplayable, there was no biographical information whatsoever, not even DOB/DOD (I believe Connie passed sometime in the mid 90s). I strongly suspect the lions share of research on this site was done on the internet, which I know from experience is a piss poor source for info on obscure figures in the music who died before the age of teh google. As for the lack of west coast musicians, I'm not prepared to give any more props to a "Canadian" jazz site that makes no mention of Fraser Macpherson and P.J Perry than I am to an American one that leaves out Art Pepper and Charlie Haden. I do agree that it's a nice source of jazz video. At least it would be if the clips worked. I give it a C minus. |

Well I have to agree that this site is Torontocentric. But that is stated on the FAQ page. The material on this site does center around concerts recorded for local radio broadcasts in TO. Hopefully this will expanded in the future, maybe incorporating portions of the Vancouver Jazz Heritage Project.
In the meantime check out this documentary on Rob McConnell http://www.canadianjazzarchive.org/C.../15644/Default. Click on the p in the popup. John I don't see any video. Actually a fairly decent start, even if a little lean. I hope they expand enough to include the rest of the country. Fred Stride www.fredstride.com |
