An underated composer but also likes to speak his mind. He posts ramblings (often on US Politics) on his website www.bobbrookmeyer.com (now with artist share) and I thought that his musings on the latest IAJE conference might cause a laugh or raised eyebrow.
The Jazz Masters Fete in NY was IAJE on speed -- saw some old friends, smiled a lot for pictures (ain't easy looking cheerful on demand) and managed a couple of anti-Bush cracks along the way. A short talk with Maria for IAJE was the high point -- we had something to talk about, a big difference. I am still wondering (and now so is Bill McFarlin) how the New Art Orchestra could make such a great impression last year and wind up with NO RESPONSE -- from anyone. No calls, emails or letters. It is getting very discouraging -- we are a hit wherever we play and I know the logistics are hard, but Jesus -- who's the competition? Maria and ..............??? Well, the guys are dedicated and seem to have a physical need to be together so, we go on as long as I can scratch the money together. Award winners were treated to Faddis (sounds like he's given up trying to play jazz and is concentrating on selected bird calls) & NY pickups and the Count Basie Band (Bill must be twirling underground) which imitates a decent college band. NOW -- as long as whoever is voting is concerned, it's too late for Mel Lewis and Jimmy Guiffre but, if you get off your ass, there's time for Bill Holman and Lee Konitz, if the Award is to mean anything other than a Grammy type sham. I am lucky to get in -- Danilo Perez was a factor and the often heard comment to me was "it's about time." The foreplay was the best and now I have 2 plaques, one signed by the appointed President himself. Looking for a good closet. Come on Bob- tell me what you REALLY think! ![]() |
