Joel Dorn is pretty famous actually, he was a producer for Atlantic in the 60s (he may have actually done some of Ray Charles last sessions for them), and produced many many great sessions for them (Mingus, Allman Brothers, Roberta Flack etc) but his best known work was probably with Rahsaan Roland Kirk. I think he left Atlantic about they time they became part of the WEA conglomerate and has been cranking through a series of labels, each lasting a year or two but putting out pretty uniformly great music.
I think the labels were Night Radio, 32 Jazz (which bought the Muse catalog), M Records and now Hyena. He's also been doing the Atlantic reissue program for Rhino, so he's been around. Leave a light burning in the window .... |

I've got a couple of slices of Joel Dorn-produced vinyl in storage up here in Vancouver that I've been enjoying since my unexpected return; Hank Crawford's "Mister Blues Plays Lady Soul" (Hank's ruminations on some Aretha Franklin tunes) and the Neville Brother's "Fiyo on the Bayou."
We were planning on moving the last of our stored stuff down to New Orleans this year. Looks like that might have to wait a bit.:-) |
