Default Cheap Web Hosting
I want to grab some web space for personal storage and file sharing.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I always have used 1and1.com and have no problems.

Godaddy is a piece of ****, avoid them like the bubonic.

dreamhost.com

Unlimited storage, Unlimited bandwidth (pretty much unlimited everything and every option available) for around $9/month. I have used them for I think about 4-5yrs now, and not a single problem since.

Depends how much space you need but does your ISP not give you any free storage?

I get 20mb with mine, not much but enough for uploading images and such.

I want it to be portable, I am moving soon. Plus my ISP and I are on bad terms. Every time I deal with them, I am reminded of Bungle. Does that put it into perspective?

Seems a little harsh.

I've been using hostgator.com for a few years now. No complaints and it's very cheap with unlimited storage.

Do you really need hosting or do you just need Dropbox?

If you do need hosting, I too am a Dreamhost user and I am quite satisfied. Increasingly, though, I think something like Dropbox would be more useful to me for personal purposes.

I use Dropbox and love it, but I want to be able to host some photos/files to friends from time to time.

PHP would not hurt, monthly bandwidth would be minimal. Personal file host use, pretty much.

Hosting every time for me. Do you really want dropbox having access to all your files, even after you delete them?

Not to mention the 4 hours lapse in security dropbox just had. Oops...

That said, I am a dropbox user. I actually use it for getting meeting minutes/agendas to my board. They use iPads so this was the quickest/easiest way to accomplish that. The files are all public domain anyway, so I don't need to worry about security of the files.

ah i just remembered you're in the usa.. reason being i have a lot of space on a VPS in the UK.. it is very fast for UK users (certainly compared to 1and1 shared hosting), but latency might be better on a box over there.

any USA onions have server space for will? am sure there are some webdesigners that post on here that are US based that would have some space for you.

if you can't find anything closer to home i could host your files on our VPS though, cheaper then dreamhost.

I've been using Netfirms for the past few years. Been satisfied. Only 5 dollars a month.

But Dropbox does precisely this... You can create photo galleries, share files, etc.

As for security, you can entrust your files to Dropbox or you can entrust them to whatever hosting company you happen to sign up with. Ultimately, you're placing trust in someone else's competence. If you want remote hosting of any sort, this is simply a prerequisite.

I guess the only question is one of price. I think a lot of hosting might actually be cheaper, but Dropbox does have the really neat multi-platform access.
